In 1984, Brazilian driver Ayrton Senna made his Formula One debut with Toleman. Throughout the next decade, he would go on to win three World titles, 41 races, 65 pole positions, and achieve 80 podium finishes. Ten years after his F1 debut, Senna crashed on lap seven of the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix while leading the race, dying instantly.

He had just moved to Williams after garnering much success with McLaren, but it was a rough start to the season. Senna had no points when they got to Imola, while a young Michael Schumacher was leading the Championship with Benetton. Determined to win the San Marino Grand Prix, Senna was at the limit when his car failed.

“As soon as you touch this limit, something happens, and you suddenly can go a little bit further. With your mind power, your determination, your instinct, and the experience as well, you can fly very high.” – Ayrton Senna

Ayrton Senna was always trying to improve, to go faster. He loved the competition, and he didn’t shy away from getting his elbows out. Everyone that knew him spoke of how his very presence demanded attention, both on and off the track. He was full of passion, drive, faith, and wisdom.

When you hear about his qualifying lap in Monaco in 1988, where he was two seconds faster than Alain Prost in the same McLaren, or when you watch as he had to be helped out of his car after his first win in Brazil 1991, you get small glimpses of the legend that he was. Even now, almost every driver on the grid will point to Ayrton Senna as their inspiration.

“With regard to performance, commitment, effort, dedication, there is no middle ground. Or you do something very well or not at all.” – Ayrton Senna

May 1st, 2024 was 30-year anniversary of his death, and his bronze statue in Imola was surrounded by flowers, art, and Brazilian flags as Formula One fans from all over the world came to pay tribute. One year later, fans continue to honor Senna’s life at his memorial.

Over thirty years after his death, he is still a Formula One legend and an inspiration to all. Senna’s legacy has become larger-than-life, impacting current drivers and fans in a way that few past champions have. He will forever be missed, but his memory and his legacy will continue to live on.
