As Formula 1 approaches the second half of the 2024 season, ATRL’s Sam Yanis analyzes the teams that are under pressure going into Zandvoort.
1. Red Bull Racing
While Red Bull started the season off strong, there’s no denying that they are beginning to struggle. Max Verstappen is still performing well, but he’s only had one podium in the last four races. It’s clear that the car isn’t as dominant as it used to be.
Sergio Pérez is also failing to score good points on most occasions. Since Austria, Pérez has only scored 20 points, while drivers like Piastri and Hamilton have scored 80. He’s currently ahead of George Russell in the Driver Standings, but he would be eighth in the Championship if it wasn’t for Russell’s disqualification in Belgium.
Red Bull might be leading both the Constructor’s and Driver’s Championships, but they are under threat. McLaren have scored almost 80 points more than them in the last seven races. If they can’t turn things around, Red Bull will lose the Constructor’s Championship with the current pace. With key personnel like Adrian Newey and Jonathan Wheatley leaving the team, the team’s future at the top of the standings is starting to look uncertain.
2. Ferrari
Since Charles Leclerc’s win in Monaco, Ferrari have been anonymous. They’ve struggled every race since, with a double DNF, bad strategy calls, and an overall lack of pace. At one point, the Italian team looked like they could be the one to fight Red Bull in the Constructor’s Championship. Now, the team could lose third place to Mercedes.
Ferrari have scored the least amount of points of the top four teams in the last five races. Mercedes has surpassed them and is now the faster car, whereas the Silver Arrows were miles behind Ferrari earlier this season. Leclerc and Sainz can only do so much with a car that doesn’t have the pace to compete with others on track.
3. Aston Martin
At the start of last year, Aston Martin was seemingly on top of the world. Fernando Alonso was on the podium left and right, and everyone would’ve expected him to be one of the seven winners this season. But now, they’re nowhere to be found at the front.
The team is almost 100 points down on Mercedes in the Constructor Standings. If they’re lucky, their drivers finish a race with a point or two. Aston Martin’s pace has continued to decline since last year, and they’re in desperate need of a change of form.
4. Williams
Williams has had a season to forget. They currently sit ninth in the Constructor’s Championship with only four points, all scored by Alex Albon. The team has faced a lot of turmoil and scrutiny in the last few months over the incident at the Australian Grand Prix. When they didn’t have a third chassis available to repair Albon’s car, they chose to let him drive Logan Sargeant’s car. This decision left Sargeant without a car during the race, and for the next few races, he didn’t have the optimum car.
Between a lack of necessary parts and an overall lack of pace, Williams are struggling. Even with the signing of current Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz for 2025, they need to take steps forward. Some good signings from James Vowles suggest that they’re on the right track to make improvements in the future.
5. Kick Sauber
Sauber has been anonymous so far this year. Both of their drivers have yet to score a point, making them tenth in the Constructor’s Championship. The few times they came close to a point, pit-stop problems or reliability issues got in the way.
Audi may be entering in 2026, but the team is suffering in 2024. They are in a waiting period, taking no real steps forward. Sauber is in danger of being the first team to score no points in a season since Haas in 2021.
